Integrating Technology

As a teacher, I am preparing students for life in the 21st century. Each year technology advances and so does our dependence on technology. Integrating technology into my class allows students to develop and apply their understanding of science content while simultaneously becoming digitally literate citizens.

Climate Chage Brochure

The photosynthesis brochure was a large project my students constructed over the course of a month. My students demonstrated their understanding of climate change, photosynthesis, deforestation, and advocacy as the wrote the various sections of their brochure. My students could have created brochures of flyers on paper but by creating digital brochures it allowed them to become more digitally literate and allowed us to involve a much larger learning community. Students learned how to write text, format, include pictures, and utilize comments on google docs. Integrating technology gave us the opportunity to connect with another school in Philadelphia. I collaborated with a fellow Teach For America Corps member to make this activity happen for our students. I created the activity and we both implemented it in our classrooms. Once our students created their brochures they shared them with the other school and we utilized google docs comment function to leave feedback. The comments feature was incredibly helpful because students had to review every comment and implement the feedback to resolve the comment. After all of the brochures were graded and given feedback we utilized technology to Skype into each other's classroom and have a reflective meeting. Integrating technology allowed my students to develop and apply their understanding of scientific content, interact with more students, become more digitally literate, and craft stronger brochures.

In this video my 10th-grade biology students are reviewing the feedback they got from the biology students at Boys Latin. My students are giving Boys Latin biology students feedback using comments on google docs and a digital rubric.

In this video, 10th-grade biology students at Boys Latin are grading my students' photosynthesis brochure. Their teacher Ms. Francsis is circulating the room asking probing questions and helping her students utilize google docs and all of its features.

This is a completed climate change brochure that was submitted by a 10th-grade biology student. The example shows scientific content, writing skills, and utilizes technology. This example demonstrates my students understanding of climate change and her ability to apply that understanding to find potential climate change solutions.

Google Slides Presentations

My students use google slides presentations to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of class content. Presentations allow my students to practice skills that will benefit them outside the classroom in a safe and structured way such as public speaking, video editing, and the ability to work effectively in groups. Use google slides allows my students to develop their computer literacy skills and develop an understanding of content.

In this video, my 10th-grade biology students are conducting research about the circulatory system. They are utilizing their research to create a google slides presentation about the circulatory system. Integrating technology allowed my students to learn and develop an understanding of topics, such as sickle cell anemia, which is not covered in our textbook. In addition, to using technology to conduct research my students created a google slides presentation and learned a new way to communicate knowledge. Presenting their presentation allowed them to apply their learning and share their knowledge with their classmates.

This is a presentation created by a group of 6th-grade science students. They used the internet to conduct research about the respiratory system while developed their understanding of this body system. Students demonstrated that they could apply the knowledge they learned by presenting their presentation to the class. Students showed mastery by correctly connecting the respiratory system to our driving question and explaining this system is interconnected to other body systems.

Coding an Interactive Presentations

In this activity, my 7th-grade students completed a worksheet about computer science and then used that information to code an interactive presentation on scratch. This was my students' first experience with coding, they coded the background, the sprite, and the dialogue. Coding is a career that is getting larger and larger as we move into an increasingly digital world, this activity gave my students a glimpse into a potential career for them. This activity allowed my students to develop an understanding of computer science, demonstrate their understanding by creating an interactive presentation, and become more digitally literate.
